Basement Cleaning Checklist

Basement Cleaning Checklist

A clean basement is important for several reasons. It can help you:

  • Prevent mold, mildew, pests, and odors from affecting your health and comfort
  • Protect your belongings from water damage, dust, and dirt
  • Maximize your storage space and find things easily
  • Create a functional and inviting living area, home office, playroom, etc.
  • A basement cleaning and organizing checklist can help you achieve a clean basement by guiding you through the necessary steps and tasks. It can also help you save time, energy, and money by preventing clutter and mess from accumulating.

Basement Cleaning and Organizing Checklist

Decluttering

  • Gather three large bins or bags and label them as “keep”, “donate”, and “toss”
  • Go through every item in your basement and assign it to one of the bins or bags
  • Be ruthless and get rid of anything that is broken, outdated, unused, or unwanted
  • Contact local charities or junk removal services to arrange for a pickup or disposal of the items you don’t need

Cleaning

  • Starting from the top of the room, clear out cobwebs from corners, light fixtures, vents, and shelves with a microfiber cloth or a vacuum attachment
  • Wash the walls, baseboards, doors, and windows with a damp cloth or an all-purpose cleaner
  • Dust all surfaces, furniture, and appliances with a microfiber cloth or a Swiffer duster
  • Clean the sink, toilet, shower, and tub if you have a bathroom in your basement with a bathroom cleaner or a soap dispenser dish brush
  • Vacuum the floor with a brush attachment or a shop vacuum for heavy-duty cleaning
  • Mop the floor with a bucket of water and dish soap or a spray mop
  • Polish the stainless steel appliances with a stainless steel cleaner or olive oil

Organizing

  • Sort the items you are keeping into categories, such as books, tools, toys, etc.
  • Choose the right storage containers for each category, such as plastic boxes, metal shelves, baskets, hooks, pegs, etc.
  • Label each container with its contents using a permanent marker or a label maker
  • Place the containers in their designated locations according to how often you use them. For example, put seasonal items on high shelves or in the attic, and put frequently used items on lower shelves or in bins near the door
  • Keep some empty space in your basement for future additions or changes
